Also RTE must be one of the few national broadcaster not to have a intern program/training course.RTÉ Player was launched on 21 April 2009. Why do we need so many, if the organisation is struggling to make ends met?Ģ: Talent: both in front and behind the Camera/Mic nepotism/ the union plays a huge part in RTE.īoth nepotism and the union play far to big a part in the Old Boys Network keeping it in friends and families, and with internal promotions rather then looking for fresh blood with new ideas. 4 FM radio station and 5 DAB only stations.
They did have a great concept in Storyland but after the second time they ran it they stopped commissioning shows from it.Īlso let's address the 2 elephants in the roomġ: RTE now has 4 TV channels RTE 1, RTE2, RTE NEWS NOW and RTEjr. I think only 3 production companies account for between 30 and 40% commission content. Its really does come down to the commissioning process, the main person in charge has been in they position for over 15 years i believe and has their own taste which feeds into the stuff we see. If you have a greater insight into how the c suite level works at rte then I would love you to share some information on that.Īlso, beyond the point but worth noting that father ted was originally pitched and rejected by rte before they went to channel 4. Other friends I have in the industry share these views. I'm speaking from my personal experience working in the post production/television industry in both Ireland and the UK. It's run like an old school company and the people ultimately making decisions are there to collect a salary, not there to deliver a good product.
Unions are generally a good thing but rte has become this bloated old school infrastructure of people being promoted to roles because they've been in the company long enough. As someone who used to work in TV, my experience is rte is highly unionised and structured. It would actually require more creativity and risk for better programming. But by your logic, the budget rte are currently spending running set talk shows could be immediately and easily cut to be single camera on location shots, which would slash the budget massively and allow for far more creativity. Sorry, I wasn't in any way saying budget doesn't matter.
